One of my favorite things about summer is that I finally have the down time to read for pleasure. No more textbooks, no more online readings, just me and a good book. This summer (well now that I am officially a college graduate I guess I can read whenever, but anyways…) I have compiled a list of books that I want to read.

1. Eat Pray Love

by Elizabeth Gilbert

I have already tried reading this book, however I only got about a third into it before school started back up. So, the other day I picked it up in hopes of reading it before the movie comes out (starring the ever-fabulous Julia Roberts). I love that this book is about self-indulgence and desire.

2. Water for Elephants

by Sara Gruen

Again, I have heard about this book before but what really made me want to read it is that they are filming the movie right now. Okay, what really truly made me want to read it is that RPattz is going to be in it, and let’s be honest, I am only 22-years-old so I am allowed to be on the RPattz train…

3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I have heard really amazing stuff about this book (which is the first book in a trilogy) so I picked it up the other day. Unfortunately it was hard to get into so I put it down and replaced it with Eat Pray Love (I figure I should read it first since I am on a deadline…). BUT I fully intend on picking it up again and powering through the somewhat slow beginning.

4. The third book in The Hunger Games series

The Hunger Games is a series that I began reading a little less than a year ago. I could ramble about it for hours, because it is a really good story, but I won’t go there now. Anyways the third and final book in the trilogy comes out in August and I CANNOT wait! I even have a little countdown ticker on my computer for it (NERD, I know), and i am contemplating rereading the first two books in preparation.

So, what books are on YOUR summer reading list? The best beach/pool accessory is a good book (and some SPF!)

The best summer jewelry is colorful. Bright hues look great with just about anything, more brights or blacks or neutrals.

Here are some of my favorite jewelery accessories of the moment:

Sequin Wave Enamel Bangles

How fun are these? I love the color combinations.

Nordstrom 'Treasure Pendants - Wish' Necklace

I was recently watching The Bachelorette (yes, I admit it) and the girl, Ali, had a really cute gold necklace with a turquoise stone. Well, I got obsessed with it and went on an online rampage to find something similar. This is the closest I got – it’s not the same but I love this necklace.

Skagen Leather Strap Watch

This watch comes in a ton of different colors and would look great on its own or stacked with a bunch of bracelets.

Arielle Collection Enamel Dome Ring

Big rings are always fun and a good conversation piece. I love this one!

Kate Spade Ultra Thin Idiom Bangle

These bracelets are more of an investment really… You can mix and match them with anything.

Now go get to playing with some more outrageous colors!

I have a new obsession (I define “obsession” as I have recently purchased more than one of this particular thing). Summer is finally here in Eugene, Oregon and that means we need to dress the part. Today I purchased my second fedora in a week… (uh oh this is a bad sign). But the truth is that summer hats are awesome for a handful of reasons. Here are a few.

1. They shade your face from damaging UV rays

I don’t know about you, but I do not want to be 30 and have wrinkles and crows feet all over my face. Hats are the perfect solution.

2. Hat = You don’t have to wash or style your hair

Hats can cover up your messy hair. Sometimes it is just too hot out to blow dry your hair, throw on a had and you’re done, Voila!

3. Hats just make you look cool

Have you ever noticed that people wearing hats look cooler? I don’t know why that is but it is a proven fact. Google it. Anyways a hat is the perfect way to give you that beachy, chill vibe.

The hardest part about wearing hats is the way you feel in them. Most people feel like they just don’t look good in hats, but that is just because you aren’t used to them. Rock them with confidence, everyone looking at you is probably thinking “I wish I looked good in hats!”

Let’s admit it, cover-ups are the easy part. The actual bathing suit is where things begin to get difficult. Whether you prefer one-pieces or bikinis, the decision is one that can be particularly grueling, and make you leave the dressing room feeling self-conscious. I like to have different bathing suits for different activities. For example, if I know that I am going to be going to a river, lake or something more active, I wear one of my cheaper suits, that I don’t mind getting dirty or worn. However, more expensive suits are definitely made better. You pay for the quality. Here are some of my favorite bathing suit styles, varying in price range.

Juicy Couture ‘Halter Swimdress’

I love this swimsuit because it reminds me of suits from the 1950’s. The corset-style bodice and the apron inspired top remind me of pictures I have seen of my grandmother who was a swimsuit model for Jantzen. I love this style, I think it is subtly sexy, classic and flattering. I have seen a lot of this trend lately, and would really like to try to find an original in an antique clothing shop. Among the sea of over exposed, scantily clad bathing suits, I think this one would stand out in a crowd. P.s. Is it me or does this model resemble the Duffster?

Victoria Secret ‘Boho Print Banded Halter Top’

I have loved this suit for quite some time now. The color combination and the print are so vivid and bright. I also like the band around the waist and top. This suit would be great for women who are bigger on top and need a little more coverage than that of a string triangle top. This suit is perfect for the beach or a pool, and at the same time is sturdy enough to do outdoor activities without worrying about anything falling out. Added bonus: Great price level.

Splendid ‘Rainbow Stripe Suit’

Everything I have every seen that is Splendid is extremely comfortable. I can just imagine how comfy and soft this suit is. I like the simplicity of this suit. The stripes are great for the nautical effect, without being too ‘i just stepped off my sailboat.’ I love the color combination and the detailing on the top straps.

While picking the right swimsuit for your body is important, remember the most important thing to have is CONFIDENCE! If you go out there looking like you love yourself and are comfortable in your skin, people will not pay attention to your body and your attitude will rub off on them.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

…But maybe you aren’t. Enter the beauty of the bathing suit cover-up. If that New Year’s Eve goal to “get into shape” didn’t quite hit the ground running, there are always ways to work around the extra pounds. Cover-ups are a great way to hide your problem areas, but they are also a fun way to spice up your beach attire and add a little more coverage. Not only do they help to protect your skin from the sun, but they also show that you are well put together. I have seen quite a few cute cover-ups this season that I want to share with those who might be going somewhere fun for Memorial Day Weekend!

BCBG MAXAZRIA ‘Draped-Sleeve Button-Front Cover-Up’

This cover-up is a spin off the popular over-sized t-shirt trend. I love the botton detail up the front and the sleeves. This type of cut on the sleeve hangs low enough to flatter those who don’t have the best arms. The cover-up also hangs at a good length, long enough to feel comfortable if you are taking care of kids by the pool or hitting the bar. The subtlety of this cover-up lends itself to fun shoes or great accessories. Added bonus: White will make you look tan!

La Blanca by Rod Beattie
‘Tropical Tantrum Cover-Up’

I love the tunic style of this cover-up. The bright colors and pattern make this piece super fun for summer get-togethers. The only tricky aspect of this cover-up is what bathing suit to pair it with. I would suggest a simple, solid bathing suit, so that you don’t have a pattern overload. If you could match your suit with one of the colors in the flowers, they would complement each other very nicely.

Trina Turk ‘Sculpted Strapless Terry Romper’

This romper is fun an flirty. Romper’s generally look best on a smaller frame, but this black one will hide any problem areas that you might have in the midsection while showing off a lot of leg! Pair it with a really bright suit or something with a lot of color for a fun look.

Splendid ‘Rainbow Stripe Tunic’

This is probably the cover-up that I would pick for myself. I love the flowy material and the color is great! This cover-up would look awesome with a solid suit (like the model above) or a fun print (maybe a paisley). This cover-up is great for women who want to camouflage their midsection, while still giving their body some shape.

BCBG MAXAZRIA ‘Sleeveless Swim Cover-Up’

This cover-up is a fun spin on the loose hanging tank tops that have been so popular lately. The electric orange color will make you look nice and bronzed, and the simple design lets you play with some really fun sandals. I really like this cover-up because of how simple it is. Add a belt if you want to show off your curves.

Which cover-up is your favorite?
