I have a new obsession (I define “obsession” as I have recently purchased more than one of this particular thing). Summer is finally here in Eugene, Oregon and that means we need to dress the part. Today I purchased my second fedora in a week… (uh oh this is a bad sign). But the truth is that summer hats are awesome for a handful of reasons. Here are a few.

1. They shade your face from damaging UV rays

I don’t know about you, but I do not want to be 30 and have wrinkles and crows feet all over my face. Hats are the perfect solution.

2. Hat = You don’t have to wash or style your hair

Hats can cover up your messy hair. Sometimes it is just too hot out to blow dry your hair, throw on a had and you’re done, Voila!

3. Hats just make you look cool

Have you ever noticed that people wearing hats look cooler? I don’t know why that is but it is a proven fact. Google it. Anyways a hat is the perfect way to give you that beachy, chill vibe.

The hardest part about wearing hats is the way you feel in them. Most people feel like they just don’t look good in hats, but that is just because you aren’t used to them. Rock them with confidence, everyone looking at you is probably thinking “I wish I looked good in hats!”

There are two reasons why sunglasses are my current obsession: 1. The sun is FINALLY starting to peak through the icky, gray winter skies of the Pacific Northwest…even if it’s just for five minutes a day; 2. I got poked in the eyeball after some serious horseplay and need a snazzy new pair of sunglasses to sport so my damaged cornea (or retina…or whatever the white part is) is properly camouflaged. The good thing about sunglasses is that, unlike a pair of jeans, they often look just as good on as they do on the rack. Here are a few of my top favorite frames of the season.

Summer Strolling:

These Ralph Lauren tortoise shades and Ray-Ban safari-inspired aviators are perfect for hanging out at the beach, cruising the boardwalk, or simply watching a summertime ball game. Top off the look with a straw fedora and you’re set for summer.

Hot Weather Glam:

Trying out a flashy new pair of sunglasses is a great way to add a little glitz and glam to your summer wardrobe. These two options from HOBO will add just enough to flair to make any tank and shorts ensemble look smashing.

…But maybe you aren’t. Enter the beauty of the bathing suit cover-up. If that New Year’s Eve goal to “get into shape” didn’t quite hit the ground running, there are always ways to work around the extra pounds. Cover-ups are a great way to hide your problem areas, but they are also a fun way to spice up your beach attire and add a little more coverage. Not only do they help to protect your skin from the sun, but they also show that you are well put together. I have seen quite a few cute cover-ups this season that I want to share with those who might be going somewhere fun for Memorial Day Weekend!

BCBG MAXAZRIA ‘Draped-Sleeve Button-Front Cover-Up’

This cover-up is a spin off the popular over-sized t-shirt trend. I love the botton detail up the front and the sleeves. This type of cut on the sleeve hangs low enough to flatter those who don’t have the best arms. The cover-up also hangs at a good length, long enough to feel comfortable if you are taking care of kids by the pool or hitting the bar. The subtlety of this cover-up lends itself to fun shoes or great accessories. Added bonus: White will make you look tan!

La Blanca by Rod Beattie
‘Tropical Tantrum Cover-Up’

I love the tunic style of this cover-up. The bright colors and pattern make this piece super fun for summer get-togethers. The only tricky aspect of this cover-up is what bathing suit to pair it with. I would suggest a simple, solid bathing suit, so that you don’t have a pattern overload. If you could match your suit with one of the colors in the flowers, they would complement each other very nicely.

Trina Turk ‘Sculpted Strapless Terry Romper’

This romper is fun an flirty. Romper’s generally look best on a smaller frame, but this black one will hide any problem areas that you might have in the midsection while showing off a lot of leg! Pair it with a really bright suit or something with a lot of color for a fun look.

Splendid ‘Rainbow Stripe Tunic’

This is probably the cover-up that I would pick for myself. I love the flowy material and the color is great! This cover-up would look awesome with a solid suit (like the model above) or a fun print (maybe a paisley). This cover-up is great for women who want to camouflage their midsection, while still giving their body some shape.

BCBG MAXAZRIA ‘Sleeveless Swim Cover-Up’

This cover-up is a fun spin on the loose hanging tank tops that have been so popular lately. The electric orange color will make you look nice and bronzed, and the simple design lets you play with some really fun sandals. I really like this cover-up because of how simple it is. Add a belt if you want to show off your curves.

Which cover-up is your favorite?

Been there, worn that. We’ve all had those days when it seems like nothing in the closet is even slightly wearable. Your favorite, go-to outfits look dull and worn out, and your mind is stuck on the top you wished you would’ve bought last weekend. This age old dilemma is all too common, yet completely surmountable. When the need to revamp your wardrobe strikes, rather than run to the mall, sometimes all you need to do is call upon a little creativity.

I recently ran across an article about a woman from New York who wore the same dress for 365 days straight. With a mission to promote sustainability and a personal philanthropy, this stylish (and brave) woman found new and interesting ways to don her LBD for an entire year — talk about making use of your closet! She tweaked her look every day by adding different accessories and even changed up how she wore the dress (fortunately for her, it could be worn backwards).

Her innovation inspired me to take a second look at my wardrobe and recognize the endless possibilities that hang in my walk-in: The simple blouse that I always pair with jeans could also look great when piled with an assortment of necklaces; the shift I save for special occasions can be dressed down just as easily when worn as a tunic over leggings.

If you’re ever struggling to piece together an outfit, think about the style savvy New Yorker who found new ways to wear an old piece day after day…after day. Once you explore the multitude of ways you can wear your favorite items, you’ll be able to revamp and reinvent your style every time you get dressed.

“Statement Necklace” is one of those buzz words that has been in every magazine and fashion blog the past 6 months. Undoubtedly you have heard of them by now, but maybe you are like myself and have yet to jump on the ship. I have been eyeing some really gorgeous necklaces lately and I want to share!

The great thing about these necklaces, is that they can be the “wow factor” of your outfit. A.K.A. (if you are anything like me) you can sleep in way too late, throw on a simple outfit, vamp it up by throwing on a necklace and VOILA – You look polished, stylish and chic! This is the beauty of the statement necklace, my friends.

Some tips:

1. Let the necklace do the talking! Refrain from pairing a statement necklace with other flashy jewelery (your everyday stud earrings and a ring are okay)

2. Pay attention to your neckline! Make sure that the necklace and the neckline of your shirt do not meet in a funky place. If the necklace falls a little over the shirt, that is perfect. They also look fabulous with a higher cut neckline, or a scoop neck if the necklace hangs lower than the top. Going in to summer, I really like statement necklaces with tube tops.

3. COLOR! Like I always preach, play with color! Turquoise and coral look so great with almost anything – or let them really stand out by pairing them with a black top.

Ready to take the leap? Me too. Let’s do this together!

One of my favorite ways to spice up an outfit is to add a pair of bright or fun patterned tights. With the right skirt, dress, shorts or romper, tights can add the perfect amount of chic style to your outfit. Most people think tights are more of a winter piece, but while the temperatures are below about 75, you can still get away with them, plus they add a nice layer while it is windy.

Colored Tights: I will admit that at first I was skeptical about trying a pair of colored tights, but if you balance them with a subtle dress or skirt they can really complete your look at make your legs POP! This past winter I embraced several dark purple hues along with a fun forest green. However, for the spring it is only fitting to venture into lighter shades and more pastels. These colors can be tricky to pull off, so listen up! Pair lighter greens and blues with a fun print that has a hint of the color in it. Try avoid being too matchy-matchy because then you might end up looking like an Easter Peep! Hue provides a ton of fun colors that will surely spark people’s attention.

Print Tights: Printed tights are the trickiest of all. Do not pair prints with other prints. Instead, try pairing them with a bold color on top, or keep it simple with nudes and cream shades. All in all look for prints that will flatter your body shape and that will not make you look shorter. Anything with vertical lines will give your legs length. Pair them with bright flats or neutral heels for the best look.

Fishnet/Crochet Tights: My favorite tight of all is a good nude fishnet. Betsey Johnson  has a fabulous pair that have the sexy seam up the back for only $18.00. They work well with almost any skirt or dress and can give your legs a smooth look. There are variations of the standard fishnet that look more like a crochet pattern. These are also fun, but make sure the pattern is not too big and that you get the right size, or else things could get ugly…

Tights can replace jewelery as your statement accessory. In fact, try to avoid any jewelery that is too out there, and let the tights do the talking. Also, try to stay away from black tights once the sun is shining, because they tend to give your outfit a winter vibe. Remember that when done right, tights can be the perfect compliment to a fabulous outfit!
